Some people either own both or want to own both, so to make one machine that can do both could sway those people.
its a valid thought, but the reason i don't think it will work on a sizeable scale is because of the "tack on" motion notion (yes!). its like with anything else, the "hey, we sorta do this too" mentality is never as good or real as the original. just as nintendo releasing final fantasy games or capcom fighters does not put the wii on a "hardcore gamer" level with ps3 and 360. those games, essentially, follow the tack-on line.
no reason why it would not take a small slice of the Wii crowd away or appeal to those PS3 die hards who at least want to sample the Wii.
i do agree that it'll grab attention and cater to a small percentage. and in line with this thinking...
Sony has nothing to lose from this and a lot to gain.
i still think this is more so a test to see where the ps4 will go.
the ps2, as you'll recall, was the casual gamer's system back in the day -- even still is to many. i think the larger game scope (and larger price tag) of the ps3 painted sony's current console with an elitist / super hardcore gamer brush. that, along with the success of the wii, toppled the scales of sony's dominance.
this "hey, we're casual, too!" device is an effort to show those fans that sony can still be there to offer them things. i do not think it will catch on for this generation, as it's too late in the game and too obvious a "me too" tack on, but they don't need it to. the small percentage you mentioned is the perfect sample demographic to beta test ideas for the next generation -- and not that sony might go solely motion-controlled, but its great to see the potential if that was a stronger offering from the getgo.

Simple fact is, if the PS3's version is as good as or close to good as the Wii version, then it will sway people who were split on which to buy. It could also switch game sales more heavily towards the PS3 for people who own both, with them no longer seeing the point to owning both if the PS3 does what its always done plus now doing the one thing they bought the Wii for.
I'm not sure whether I should be a optimistic or terrified if that really does hold true.
On one hand, Sony potentially gets a great deal more support from Wii demographic.
On the other hand, if they do get all that support, they might be tempted to take away priority from their less casual audience.
I'm lost without the sig divider.
