Google is ....is rapidly becoming a world wide monopoly (and one all to willing to bend to the will of government despots in places like China).
Our government has always had the power to bust an illegal monopoly to protect the public. The most dangerous kind of monopoly is one that controls information.
In my mind, companies like Google (and some of the other big media companies) are exactly what anti-trust laws were designed to prevent.
Google’s Anti-Trust Problem Appears Very Real
- The government is planning to “reinvigorate” anti-trust enforcement. According to a statement put out today by the Justice Department: Christine A. Varney, Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Department’s Antitrust Division, today announced that ....“The Division will return to tried and true case law and Supreme Court precedent in enforcing the antitrust laws."
the Bloomberg news service previously quoted Varney saying in public that Google was a monopoly today:
The U.S. economy will “continually see a problem — potentially with Google” because it already “has acquired a monopoly in Internet online advertising . . . ”
Varney also previously said that she did not believe Google had manipulated markets to achieve its dominance in search and search marketing. But the effect may be the same, limited competition, however benign the manner in which it came about.
It’s far from certain that Varney and her colleagues at the Justice Department will “go after” Google. However her public statement in favor of stronger enforcement to protect and promote competition, as well as her use of the “M Word” and “Google” in the same sentence, all suggest that Google may have some unpleasant legal challenges ahead.
Google And Other Tech Firms Brace For More Anti-Trust Scrutiny
- Silicon Valley companies are bracing for a tough new phase of antitrust scrutiny, responding to signs of heavier enforcement by the Obama administration and continued pressure from abroad.
A stricter stance against companies that dominate their sectors is likely to test government-relations strategies that technology giants adopted during the Bush administration.
Google Inc., one of the most prominent companies under the watch of antitrust regulators, says its lobbyists and executives since March have met with about 40 groups, including lawmakers, regulators and advertising agencies, to argue that its business practices don't reduce competition.

Yeah, there's already speculation that Obama is talking tough on this issue but, when it comes right down to it, he'll never go after them because the head of Google is one of his biggest supporters (right up there with Bill Ayers in fact).

Google Seeks to Tap Power Markets: Google has applied for approval to become an electricity marketer, giving it the authority to buy and sell bulk power the way utilities and energy traders do.

Suit Against Google Seeks Damages for Pictures, Art
- A lawsuit filed yesterday in Manhattan federal court seeks to force Google to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in damages for pictures and art used in the gigantic digital library it is trying to create. The copyright infringement lawsuit was filed by groups representing tens of thousands of photographers, artists and graphics workers. The groups are seeking up to $150,000 for each work of art they say was infringed.
The action adds a new wrinkle to the dispute over whether Google should be allowed to preside over the world's largest digital library. Southern District Judge Denny Chin has not yet ruled whether to accept a $125 million settlement of a lawsuit groups representing authors and publishers brought against Google
